2007

The Annual General Meeting of the NSW Chapter was held on 19 September 2007.

Sir Anthony Mason AC KBE QC delivered the inaugural Whitmore Lecture preceding the AGM. The Whitmore Lecture was named after Professor Harry Whitmore who lectured at the University of Sydney and University of New South Wales. He was an author and a 'founding father' of what was then known as public law. According to Justice Garry Downes he was "a charismatic lecturer". It is expected that the Whitmore Lecture will take place each year in conjunction with our AGM.

Sir Anthony Mason was, along with Professor Harry Whitmore, a member of the Kerr Committee established in 1968 to advise the Federal Government about a proposal for a Commonwealth judicial body to review administrative decisions. Sir Anthony was Solicitor General of the Commonwealth at the time and went on of course to become the Chief Justice of the High Court sitting on the bench of the High Court from 1972 to 1995. The major achievements of the Kerr Committee's deliberations included the passage of the Administrative Decisions (Judicial Review) Act 1975, the establishment of the Federal Court and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

A copy of Sir Anthony's paper is attached [ PDF version ].
